Maria Papis-Wieczorek is a trainee attorney-at-law, an associate in the corporate department of Rymarz Zdort Maruta and a member of the Compliance, Forensic and ESG practices.

Experience and education:

Maria advises in the areas of ethics and compliance (whistleblower protection, anti-corruption, AML/CFT, counterparty verification, economic sanctions, white collar crime, collective entity liability), forensic (forensic audits, investigations), ESG (corporate sustainability reporting) with a focus on social and governance aspects, life sciences (in pharmaceutical and cosmetic law) and Legal Design (simplifying legal communications).

She assists businesses in building comprehensive compliance management systems, including on the basis of international standards such as ISO 37301 (compliance), ISO 37001 (anti-corruption) or ISO 37002 (whistleblowing). She also specialises in conducting internal investigations, including as a result of whistleblower reports. She assists organisations of all sizes in preparing for sustainability reporting, including helping them to eliminate any gaps.

Maria performs legislative monitoring to familiarise businesses with new legal obligations and to protect them from any negative consequences resulting from non-compliance or failure to take appropriate actions. She assesses an organisation’s exposure to sanctions risk, both from the sanctioning and sanctioned party’s perspective, and assists in standardising internal supply chain contractor due diligence processes.

Maria is also experienced in transforming legal documents using Legal Design methodologies and plain language principles to increase their effectiveness and make them understandable to their audience.

Maria graduated with honours from the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw. During her time there, she was repeatedly awarded the Rector’s Scholarship for students for outstanding academic achievements. She was awarded second place in a national competition for the best master’s thesis in the field of commercial law for her thesis entitled “Transparency of companies in terms of sustainable development in light of European Union law”. She is a member of the legislative monitoring team for the Polish ESG Association, and a co-author of a commentary to the Law on the Protection of Whistleblowers.
