Dr Zbigniew Okoń

Dr Zbigniew Okoń is an attorney-at-law, a senior counsel in the technology department of Rymarz Zdort Maruta and the head of the Intellectual Property practice.

Experience and academic work:

An expert in intellectual property law, new technologies law and marketing law, he has extensive experience in IP/IT contracts, licence agreements (including in relation to open-source licences), software implementation, maintenance and development agreements, as well as the legal protection of software, databases and AI.

Zbigniew also specialises in providing legal services to some of the largest Polish companies in respect of the regulations concerning marketing loyalty programmes, promotional and audiotext lotteries, and products subject to advertising restrictions, as well as the largest e-commerce implementations (online supermarkets, marketplace platforms and mobile applications).

He has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed research papers throughout his career, such as “Prawo Internetu” (Internet Law), “Prawo reklamy i promocji”, “IT Law in Poland”, “Cyberlaw – Poland”, a commentary on the Polish Copyright and Related Rights Act and the monograph “Prawnoautorska ochrona programów komputerowych” (Copyright protection of computer programs).

Zbigniew is a lecturer at public and private universities (the University of Opole, the Jagiellonian University, the University of Wrocław, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, the Polish Academy of Sciences, Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University and Kozminski University in Warsaw). He cooperates with the Allerhand Institute and the Centre for Research on Legal and Economic Problems with Electronic Communication (Centrum BadańProblemów Prawnych i EkonomicznychKomunikacjiElektronicznej) at the Faculty of Law and Business of the University of Wrocław. He is a highly regarded business coach with a track record that includes giving several hundred presentations at conferences, congresses, training courses and workshops related to the above-mentioned legal fields.

In the legal ranking prepared by Rzeczpospolita, Dr Zbigniew Okoń has been ranked among the best lawyers in Poland in the field of intellectual property since 2016, including being named as an individual leader in intellectual property, industrial property and copyright law in 2020, and as an individual leader in copyright law in 2021 and 2022. In another prestigious legal ranking, The Legal 500, he was named as a recommended lawyer in the areas of Commercial, Corporate & M&A in 2021 and 2022.
